WAVES Singing Platoon- early April 1945
Led by Specialist (S) Nancy Ann Lynch
Regimental Review on a snowy morning
USS Hunter -Bronx, New York. US Naval Training School (Women's Reserve)
WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) existed only for World War II and were the first women in history to be actual members of the U.S. Navy. The author enlisted in 1944, and was assigned to train and instruct recruits at the only U.S. Naval Training Station for WAVES in the country. This self-published book gives a comprehensive history of the formation and training of WAVES, and recounts the difficulty that nationally prominent women educators and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt encountered in having women accepted in “A Man’s Navy”. Castellano, in both the book and her lectures, recalls her experiences with the dedicated and patriotic women who traveled to boot camp in New York “from sea to shining sea” to become WAVES.
